Beginning Research

When you beginning research, don't get discouraged! Research is never just a straight line. It's a rollercoaster as you revise and clarify your visions.

What is a "good" research question?

  • You cannot Google the answer
  • It does not repeat what is already known 
  • It adds to existing knowledge
  • It expands on existing knowledge of frames it in a new context 
  • It is narrow and specific

Good research can also be explained as "thick" and "thin"

  • Thin questions would be one that has a straightforward or easy answer like "How many stripes on the American flag?"
  • Thick questions would be "What is the history and symbolism of the American flag?"
